Employees sue Twitter after mass layoffs

Former Twitter employees have sued, saying they have not received enough notification under federal and California law that they have lost their jobs, amid ongoing mass layoffs of the company's employees.

Five current or former Twitter employees filed the class action in San Francisco federal court Thursday, including: Emmanuel Cornet, a software engineer known for his satirical cartoons critical of Silicon Valley, who was fired on Tuesday, according to the complaint.

According to NBC News, Twitter informed employees Thursday evening that it will begin laying off, days after Elon Musk, the billionaire and CEO of electric car maker Tesla, and space maker SpaceX, took control of Twitter after completing its acquisition deal. compared to $44 billion on October 28.

Twitter told employees Thursday night, days after Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took control of the company, that it would begin laying off employees, according to communications obtained by NBC News.

In the email, Twitter said employees will receive a notification about their employment via a work email if they continue to work, or via a personal email if their employment with the company has ended.

Twitter employees expect the company to reduce its workforce by 50 percent, which means it will lay off approximately 3,700 employees.

The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers to file advance notification within 60 days of mass layoffs or factory closures.

The complaint states that "Plaintiffs are providing this action in pursuit of ensuring Twitter's compliance with the law and filing the required notice or termination payments in connection with anticipated layoffs."

The suit asks the court to issue an order requiring Twitter to comply with the Amendment Reporting Act and retrain workers. It also seeks to prevent Twitter from urging employees to sign documents that waived their right to participate in litigation.
