The iOS Gmail widget gets better at its job.

Google is releasing three productivity updates for its productivity apps for the iPhone and iPad. Gmail will get a widget for its home screen after the original was taken out of the app sometime last year. For Google Meet, the picture-in-picture feature is now available on iOS.

And the company announced that it's updating the Gmail widget for iOS with a useful new one that shows you the topics and senders of emails in your inbox.

The company says that the new tool is being launched in the next few weeks to replace the previous version that was not well received.

This also means that the Gmail mail widget for iOS has the same functionality as the existing Gmail mail widget for Android.

And when the first version of the Gmail mail widget for iOS was released, it wasn't helpful. It only provided shortcuts to different screens via the app like your inbox and email composer.

And the widget wasn't showing you much information about the emails you've received. This is despite the fact that it tells you the number of unread messages in your inbox.

Part of the lack of functionality of the old widget is due to Apple's limitations. It does not currently allow you to build interaction in the widget, and any click made by the user must be handled by running the application.

These rules have not changed significantly since the introduction of the first widget. But the new design makes it clear that there is still room for useful information.

You may not be able to archive an email from your home screen, for example. But you can at least get a sense of what's waiting in your inbox.

The current version cannot display the information you need

Google has also announced other upcoming improvements to its apps that may be useful to heavy users of its services.

And Google Meet (a business-focused video chat app) is getting picture-in-picture support for iOS, so you can still see your coworkers or presentation as you switch apps to check a file or email.

Google also says it's expanding the keyboard shortcuts available to people who use Google Sheets with an external keyboard.

You can press and hold the Command key to see a list of available keys. Shortcuts make it easy to complete common and advanced tasks across Google Sheets using a small keyboard. Such as selecting an entire row or finding and replacing specific values.
