Data science predicts who will win the World Cup in 2022.

After qualifying from five different regions, the FIFA World Cup 2022 will begin on Sunday in Qatar, with 32 teams competing in the group stage:Asia, Africa, South America, North America and Europe.

The best players in the world play in this tournament, including: the trio (Paris Saint-Germain) Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's top scorer, Harry Kane, captain of England, Robert Lewandowsk, Poland star and Ballon d'Or winner 2018, and Luka Modric, Real midfielder Madrid, and many others.

It is also expected that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be the last World Cup to witness the appearance of Portuguese stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine Lionel Messi, as Ronaldo's participation in the 2026 World Cup is considered unlikely, as he will be 41 years old, while Messi will be 39 years old.

This is why this tournament is a great opportunity for fans who are united by the footballing witch, and currently agree on one question: Who will win the 2022 World Cup?

The well-known video game company EA SPORTS has conducted simulations through the game (FIFA 23), and player ratings used in different game modes to simulate all 64 matches to predict which team will win the FIFA World Cup, and which player will win the Golden Boot award. In the Qatar World Cup 2022, the results were as follows:

  • Argentina won the title on penalties against Brazil.
  • Argentina beat the Netherlands in the quarter-finals before beating France 1-0 in the semi-finals, to enter the final with its rival Brazil.
  • Lionel Messi scored his eighth goal in the tournament to give his country the title for the first time since 1986, and the third in its history, and will also include the cup that was missing in its treasury of titles.
  • Lionel Messi won the Golden Boot award and the best player in the tournament, scoring eight goals in seven matches, including the decisive goal in the final.

It is worth noting that EA Sport ran a similar simulation in the last 3 editions of the tournament, before the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and each time its predictions were correct in the tournament: Spain, Germany and France, respectively.

The Canadian company (BCA Research) also conducted another computer simulation at the end of last October to predict the winning team in the 2022 World Cup, where a supercomputer was based on player statistics from the FIFA game as well, in addition to a sample of 192 matches in the group stage, and 64 A knockout match, played during the World Cup Finals between 2006 and 2018, with the results as follows:

  • Argentina beat Portugal on penalties.
  • England reached the semi-finals but lost to Portugal on penalties.

It is worth noting that both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have not won the World Cup with their country, despite their illustrious careers, and given that they are both in their late thirties, this is likely their last chance.

The company (BCA Research) explained that its conclusion about Argentina’s victory is based on the BCA World Cup two-step model, which combines macro and micro variables, and depends on the database of player statistics from the FIFA game simulation, and the model showed that on December 18, 2022; The world will watch a final between Argentina and Portugal, and it will be a duel to decide who is the best player of all time between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Argentina have an advantage in terms of experience and success rate, as they scored five penalties in the last World Cup, winning four of them with a success rate of 77%.

While Portugal won its match against England in the 2006 World Cup on penalties, scoring three goals out of five attempts with a success rate of only 60%.

In addition to excelling in penalty shootouts, Argentina enter this World Cup as the team most likely to win, playing their matches without losing since July 2019. Messi is also in better shape than his Portuguese counterpart, scoring nine goals and providing ten assists in 15 games so far this season.

In the end; So far, it is clear that data science and computer simulations are in agreement that Argentina will win the 2022 World Cup whether they play the final against Brazil or Portugal, but this is just an expectation and we may see a lot of changes during the tournament.
